The REALTOR® Code of Ethics and Professional Standards

First enacted in 1913, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics was truly revolutionary for its time. The history of real estate for the preceding 150 years was a history of rampant land speculation, exploitation and disorder.

With the exception of a now defunct association of printers, the REALTORS® were the first business group outside the "learned professions of medicine, engineering and law" to adopt a formal Code of Ethics.

Today, the REALTOR® Code of Ethics continues to be a viable, living developing guide for REALTORS®, providing the protection the public deserves and requires. The NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® and the respective state associations and member boards of REALTORS® are committed and pledged to such protection.
